Tips to Prevent Dry Skin

If air around you is dry, it will literally suck moisture out of your skin, Dry Skin conditions usually aggravate in winter season.  Dry Skin and scaling more commonly develops on the lower legs, arms and abdomen. There are ways and means available to avoid Dry Skin.

  • Take Bath with Warm Water. Hot water immediately washes away your natural skin oils. Water at room temperature or warm water is best for bathing.
  • Avoid Strong Cleansers. Replace strong cleansers with mild and skin-friendly. Look for some beneficial ingredients like essential oils in skin products. Soaps can strip oils from the skin.
  • Reduce Time in Swimming Pool, Bathtub or Shower. Swimming Pools often have high dose of Chlorine that leaves the skin dry. Similarly, spending more time in the water often leaves your skin less hydrated than before you started. Take bath once a day. Average 7 minutes for bath are more than enough.
  • Moisturize right after baths and showers. To catch and retain moisture from a bath or shower, it is better to apply a moisturizer on the skin is still damp.
  • Choose the right moisturizer. Use moisturizers with essential oils. Products that also contain fat molecules known as Ceramides, helps to protect the skin. The lesser water in a moisturizer, the longer it will last, when doubtful opt for a thicker one.
  • Use a humidifier. Humidifier keeps the air in room moist. Use distilled water instead of tap water, humidifying the air can reverse the process of skin dehydration and is predominantly supportive for patients with dermatitis.
  • Use Lip Balm for Dry Lips. Apply a lip balm that contains petrolatum on dry lips especially during night. Petroleum Jelly, Chap Stick and Mineral Oil are same thing as lip balm.
  • Use Saline Sprays. These sprays can assist to keep the mouth, eyes and nasal areas hydrated, chiefly during travel.
  • Drink a lot of Water. If you drink a lot of water, it will automatically keep your skin hydrated. Caffeinated and alcoholic drinks leads to dehydration and dry skin, add a lot of water in your daily routine to compensate for these drinks.
